About the Blues

The Gettysburg Independent Blues is part of the 2nd Military District, Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR), the uniformed and ceremonial component of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW).

The Blues play a vital role in the community by providing honor guard services and supporting numerous civic and historical events. The unit has the distinction of leading major Gettysburg parades, including the Remembrance Day and Memorial Day parades. Beyond ceremonial duties, the Blues regularly conduct living‑history demonstrations to educate the public about soldiers’ lives, drill and ceremony, and other Civil War–era topics.

Recognized as one of the elite units within the SVR, the Blues maintain a high standard of discipline while fostering a relaxed, family‑oriented environment. As a fraternal organization, we place strong emphasis on camaraderie and fellowship. After a full day of drill, members often gather for potluck meals and social time.

The Blues are headquartered in the historic Corporal Jack Skelly Grand Army of the Republic Hall in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Corporal Skelly, a member of the original Blues, died of wounds sustained at the Second Battle of Winchester.

The 2nd Military District includes Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

Membership in the Blues is open to males age 14 and older who reside within the 2nd Military District and are Junior Members, Associates, or Heritage Members of the SUVCW. All levels of experience are welcome. For more information, please contact us—our team will be glad to assist
